PRO-DEMOCRACY PAC EXPOSES CONGRESSMAN SERRANO’S HYPOCRISY + VIDEO ( IN SPANISH )

Launches New Media Campaign with “Must See” Serrano Campaign Video ( in spanish )

Washington, DC -- The U.S.-Cuba Democracy PAC today announced that it is launching a new media campaign focusing on the faces of hypocrisy regarding Cuba policy in the United States Congress.

The first target of the campaign is Congressman Jose Serrano (D-NY). The campaign will expose Serrano’s hypocrisy pursuant to his recent, "closed-door" legislative maneuver in the $410 billion Omnibus Appropriations Bill seeking to benefit the Cuban dictatorship. Congressman Serrano's colleagues, supporters and constituents need to know about his continued support of regional tyrants, such as the Castro brothers in Cuba and Hugo Chavez of Venezuela.

In a 2008 statement upon the illegitimate “transfer” of power from Fidel Castro to his brother Raul, Serrano stated:

"Today’s news that Fidel Castro has retired from leading his nation proves yet again that this important figure defies the attempts of his critics to paint him simply as a power-hungry authoritarian...It is time to recognize that Castro was a great leader for his people.”

However, as a candidate for Congress in the 1990’s, Congressman Serrano was telling a different story. In fact he declared that once elected he would “demand that the Castro’s leave power, so that Cuba becomes free.” See full clip of Serrano Statement with translated text at

“As Castro’s political prisoners wither in decrepit cells, pro-democracy activists on the island are beaten and harassed, and civil rights activists remain on hunger strikes, Congressman Serrano is looking for ways to provide unilateral concessions to the regime he so admires.” said Mauricio Claver-Carone, a Washington, D.C.-based Director of the U.S.-Cuba Democracy PAC.

Similarly, while Venezuela’s democratic opposition and student movement bravely mobilize against Hugo Chavez, Congressman Serrano chose to host this radical figure in his New York district.

“Congressman Serrano took a constitutional oath to support and defend the interests of this great nation; not to advance the best interests of the hemisphere's most brutal, undemocratic regimes,” added Claver-Carone.

This new campaign will also target U.S. Senator Christopher Dodd (D-CT). Dodd is facing a tough re-election campaign in 2010, and remains plagued with questions about preferential mortgages from Countrywide. Dodd has been a life-long supporter of normalizing relations with the Castro regime without fundamental democratic pre-conditions.

The U.S. Cuba Democracy PAC is a bipartisan political action committee founded in 2003. Since its inception it has raised over $2.75 million and participates in over 200 federal races nationwide. The U.S.-Cuba Democracy PAC is currently the largest, single foreign policy political committee in the nation and the largest, single Hispanic political contributor in history.
